Our blog is Carbon Neutral!

co2 neutral coupons attractive shopping offers with kaufDA.deWe've joined the cause “My blog is carbon neutral!” It's an initiative, originally started in Germany by the “Make it Green” program, that has the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

All we had to do was blog about the program and in exchange they will plant a tree for our blog and thereby neutralize our blog’s carbon footprint for the next 50 years! Everyone can make a small contribution to the environment. Why not try it!

The trees are planted in Plumas National Forest in Northern California by “Arbor Day Foundation” through their partner in US for the “My blog is carbon neutral” initiative. The “Arbor Day Foundation” is a non-profit conservation and education organization with the goal helping reforest 5,500 acres of Plumas National Forest with 792,000 trees.

How safe are those dog food cans?

Some of the highest quality dog foods on the market come in cans. But did you know that there is a potential danger lurking in those food containers?

Yep, that's right, danger! And it comes in the form of BPA, otherwise known as bisphenol-A, a chemical that has been proven to be dangerous to humans. If it's dangerous to humans, you can bet it's also dangerous to us dogs (and kitties too)!

Bisphenol A or BPA is a chemical used to make plastics, including the linings of canned food products used by humans and pets. BPA is known to leach from the plastic liners of canned foods into the food itself, consequently contaminating the food and linking to detrimental health effects in humans such as cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and more.

The research:

In January of this year CBS News reported that the FDA issued a warning to consumers about the potential concern they have for BPA, stating "it now has "some concern" about the potential effects of the chemical - especially on the "brain behavior and prostate glands in fetuses, infants and young children."

Organic Grace says..."foods in #7 plastic containers and the majority of canned foods are exposed to this toxic chemical. Bisphenol-A is a plastic and resin ingredient used to line metal food and drink cans, and it's a main building block for polycarbonate (PC) plastics. Even at low doses, bisphenol A has been linked to cancer, birth defects, miscarriages...and more."

According to TreeHugger, the FDA says, "17% of the American diet comes out of cans, and many of those have an epoxy liner made with bisphenol-A, a chemical which can mimic human estrogen and which is linked to breast cancer and early puberty in women. "

According to the Natural Resource Defense Council, "the FDA has been slow to acknowledge the harm caused by BPA and has been reluctant to regulate the use of this chemical in food packaging. While they continue to conduct research and deliberate when there will be enough evidence to compel them to act, Americans continue to be exposed on daily basis to this chemical which has been linked a wide array of harmful effects."

In July, the NRDC filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration for its failure to act on a petition to ban the use of bisphenol-A (BPA) in food packaging, food containers, and other materials likely to come into contact with food.

In 2007, The Environmental Working Group released a report discussing high levels of of BPA contamination in canned foods."

In April 2009, Canada became the first nation to formally declare that bisphenol A is a hazard to human health. The country already placed a ban on using the chemical in baby bottles, but this move lands BPA on the Canadian government's list of toxic substances.

What about your dog's food?

Unfortunately, there are no studies of BPA in pet food cans. So how can you be sure your pet food is safe?

We've found that there is sometimes a difference in the size of the can (5.5 oz vs 13 oz.) whether the can may or may not have lining that contains BPA. Many (but not all) 5.5 oz. cans are made of aluminum and may not contain BPA, however many cans of the 13 oz. size are made of steel and may contain BPA in the lining.

Encouragingly, many pet food companies are changing their suppliers of 13 oz. (and 5.5 oz.) size cans and/or working with them to provide BPA-free linings.

Our recommendation?

If you have concerns about BPA in your pet's food can, you can write or email your pet food manufacturer and ask if they use cans that are lined with plastics containing BPA. But we aren't sure they will know the correct answer, as the cans they purchase come from multiple sources and multiple locations. We urge you to investigate the issue with your pet's food manufacturer and tell them about your concerns, while encouraging them to utilize BPA-free cans, if they are presently using them.

When choosing to feed your dog canned food, purchase the food from a small, reputable company that is completely committed to your pets health, and that sources their food ingredients and packaging from local, USA made, healthier sources. These smaller, committed companies will likely know more about the packaging they use when you contact them, and we believe will be more apt to answer your questions about the potential of BPA in your dog's food cans.

Another idea is to test for BPA at home. Here is some info on how you can test for BPA in your pet's food at home. Although we don't know of the reliability of the results utilizing these tests.

Get educated, education is always key to the health of your dog!

Review: Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs

Lew Olson, PhD, author of the new book "Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs - The Definitive Guide to Homemade Meals" was super kind to send us one of her books for our review not too long ago.

Being a green dog, I'm really concerned about the food I eat. Mum has always held the belief that whole foods, those that are unprocessed and in their natural form, have the highest nutritional value and are the most good for her. So it was only natural that she apply that philosophy to my diet as well, when she adopted me!

Since we travel a lot with agility and such, and find it very difficult when we are away to find raw foods without antibiotics and hormones, I eat a variety of foods, raw, cooked, and a little super-duper high quality kibble, with supplements to keep me in the best health and shape possible. So when Lew sent us her book, we were super excited, because it really supports our
philosophy too!

We've been reading the book on and off over the past weeks, and found that we're picking it up often as a resource. It's organized very well to help you understand the importance of nutrition, what foods are best, how to find the best foods, and even how to feed. We loved the section on 'recipes' for feeding raw, since when we first got into raw it was a bit daunting to know what to buy and what to feed. But Lew explains it very thoroughly in an easy to understand manner!

BTW - that's me chomping down on a raw organic chicken back that we get from a local farm that raises organic chicken, pork and beef and cut's it all up for us! Nom!

In the book Lew discusses canine nutritional needs and explains the research on how home-prepared foods, particularly raw foods, can meet pets' needs better than commercial, processed dog food. Very important stuff...especially with all the nasty new and recalls on processed foods over the past years!

But the best part is that Lew talks about how you can start with small steps to improve your dog's diet, and grow from there! And for those that think feeding raw is difficult, well, this book will make you think it's easy and you can do it too, because it is!

We highly recommend the book, so here are some resources on where to find it:

Today is Blog Action Day! A Day to Change the World!

I may be a dog, but even I know that dogs, just like humans, can have a positive and negative impact on our amazing Planet Earth.
Today is Blog Action Day, a day when bloggers from 125 different countries, in every corner of the Planet, come together to talk about water issues in our communities and around the World to bring awareness to the growing concerns about one of our most precious resources.

Water is a very important part of any dog's and human's life, it's our lifeblood. As we talked about in our blog post "Water, the basis of a dog's life" not all water is safe, and for some in the World it's scarce!

We wanted to share today our top 10 tips for helping to keep your water healthier, safer and available for you, your dog and for all of us!

So let's get started!

  • Go organic! Those chemicals many put on their lawns can be very dangerous for your dog and for you. So intead use organic fertilizers to healthy up your lawn, use all-natural means to battle pests and create an organic, healthy and safe lawn for your dog and for you and your family.
  • Purchase fruits, vegetables and meats from your local organic farmer and help to minimize the use of dangerous farm chemicals that are big polluters of our lakes, rivers and streams.
  • Pick up your dog's doo when out and about and dispose of it the most environmentally friendly way possible! This cuts down on the spread of unhealthy diseases that can be spread through puddles, creeks and streams, and saves on landfill use and leaching of the bad stuff into our water supply.
  • Purchase safe reusable water/beverage bottles when toting water for your dog and for yourself. It's not only healthier, but it saves on the contribution of disposed water bottles in our landfills. Best bests for reusable water bottles are made with stainless steel.
  • Utilize a water filter for your dog's water that filters out both dangerous chlorines and fluorides to help your dog be healthier.
  • Replace any plastic dog bowls that may leash dangerous chemicals into your dog's water with stainless steel bowls. And use vinegar/water to clean them regularly.
  • Keep your pup from drinking out of the garden hose, the combination of leaching plastic, chlorine and fluoride, and lead from brass fittings can be dangerous and unhealthy.
  • Get a filtered low flow bath/shower head for your dog's bathing area to save on water usage and filter out those dangerous water chemicals.
  • Utilize environmentally friendly shampoos, conditioners, cleaning products, laundry detergents, non-chlorine stain removers and other items to keep your water cleaner in your community, and healthier and safer for your dog and for you.
  • Keep your pup from drinking out of, or swimming in, potentially harmful ponds, streams, rivers or puddles, it will keep them healthier and happier...just as a green dog should be.

This is just a start! We challenge you to take one step, one paw forward, in helping to positively effect the Planet, our Planet...our wonderful, wonderful Planet Earth!

Together, we really can change the World!!!
