News: Sydney Morning Herald talks about reducing your pets carbon pawprint!

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, having a green pet is becoming more and more of a priority. Consider these stats: 63% of Australian households, one of the highest rates in the world, own a pet. This includes 2.75 million dogs, 2.3 million cats, 9 million birds, 20 million fish and, increasingly, reptiles. Earlier this year, carbon-trading company Easy Being Green estimated that an average cat causes almost half a ton of greenhouse gas emissions per year, and a dog produces 1.75 tons. So how do you keep your pet green? The tTeasdale's four-month-old Hebe is lying on a cushion in the sun. Her paw flies up to catch a twist of paper dangling on a length of string above her. This homemade kitten toy is one way that owner Sarah Teasdale's family minimizes the environmental impact of its new member. "I don't want to use up valuable resources," says Teasdale. News: The environmental impact of pets!

Christie Keith who we visit regularly over at the PetConnection Blog, wrote a wonderful article the other day about the environmental impact of pets. The article appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and in their online version SFGate.com. The article discusses the day in and day out life of owning a pet and how you can work to reduce the pawprint your pet leaves on the environment. She says...
In this column, I'm going to look at the environmental impacts of pet ownership, some of which are fairly obvious and some of which most of us rarely consider. Then in my next column, I'll examine the solutions to these problems, and even provide a glimpse into ways that sharing our lives with companion animals improves the planet.
Read this column and watch for her follow up column. We'll be sure and post about it here! Photo of Scarlett courtesy of Christie Keith.

News: A doodley doo of an idea!

Looks like residents in Liverpool may be scooping up prizes in addition to the obligatory poo, says officials in the office of the City of Liverpool. Until the end of November the council's environmental wardens will be on the look out for people who pick up their pet's mess as part of the 'Caught Doing Right' campaign. Anyone 'caught in the act' keeping the streets clean will be handed a 'praise postcard' which they can then send by freepost and be entered into a prize drawing. The drawing will take place in December and lucky residents have a chance of winning top doggy-related prizes including a year's supply of dog food. Read more! Woofs! I give this campaign a clean paw! Woofs!

News: Bankstown - green dog progress in Austrialia!

This just great to see! The City Council of Bankstown in Australia is really thinking about the impact us pups (and other 'best friends') have on the environment. Very progressive of them. The Bankstown City Council provides a range of services and facilities for residents, visitors and local businesses. Bankstown, which was established in 1797 by Governor Hunter in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, is today one of the largest Local Government Areas in New South Wales, with approximately 170,000 residents speaking more than 60 different languages. We found an article on their website that they explain...
We all love our pets, but it is essential that we all become responsible pet owners. Responsible pet ownership allows you to enjoy the presence of native birds and wildlife in your surroundings as well as your pet. Poor management of domestic animals can have a significant impact on the local environment in numerous ways from producing pollution to killing native wildlife.

News: Cat or Dog - which is better for the environment!

Some say that the world is divided between cat people and dog people. Not in our family, we love all animals! Are folks now thinking in the extreme and asking themselves, "is it time we began choosing our pets on another basis altogether - the environment?" In a recent article from the Sydney Morning Herald...
"Both cats and dogs can have a detrimental effect on the environment," says Rodney van der Ree, senior ecologist at the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology. "But I would have to say that in terms of predation at least, cats are the worst offenders."

Pup Products: Buddy Wash!

For a couple of months after Mum gives me a bath, two-leggers that get close to me always say, you smell soooooo good! And I do! No, no, I didn't roll in yucky stuff. Mum gave me a bath in Buddy Wash - our absolute favorite shampoo. Buddy Wash is made by the folks at Cloud Star. Here is the low-down from their website.
  • Light and refreshing with a Lavender & Mint scent
  • pH-balanced to be gentle on your dog's sensitive skin
  • Free of potentially harmful SLS and ALS
  • Safe for use on puppies
  • Soap free
  • Made in USA
  • Recyclable packaging
Buddy Wash is made from pure, natural ingredients and botanical extracts. You'll know the difference the first time you snuggle with your furry friend after a bath. Harsh, alcohol-based shampoos can leave your pet's coat dry and irritated, but not Buddy Wash.

Fun stuff - Unforgettable Animal Actors!

There are many, many TV and movie animal actors who have entertained us over the years - cats, dogs, wild animals, birds, and more. All types of animals have been on the big (and little) screen and either tugged at our hearts, made us laugh, or made a lasting impression for one reason or another.

The cool folks at PetsitUSA started this Link Love Project so we could make a list of some of our favorites! Let’s see how many unforgettable animal actors we can name!

————— Copy and paste this line and below ——————

List your favorite animal actor and let’s share some link love in the process!

Here’s what to do:

1.) Copy and paste the matrix of “Unforgettable Animal Actors” below, courtesy of PetsitUSA.com!

2.) Substitute the Host Tag and one of the “Animal Actors” in the matrix with the name of your favorite animal actor and the URL of your blog, just like I did.

3.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their “Animal Actors”, practice good paw by copying his/her Host Tag’s anchor text (automatically the associated link will also be copied) and paste it over one of your “Animal Actors” below.

5.) Encourage and invite your readers to do the same and soon we will have a list of unforgettable animal actors!

Host Tag: Enzo (from My Dog Skip) - Raise A Green Dog!

1. Mr. Ed - PetsitUSA.com 2. Buddy (from Air Bud) - JohannTheDog 3. Benji (he was a rescue!)- RescueMe 4. Flipper - PawsibleMarketing 5. Pete (from the Little Rascals) - Fuzzy Logic 6. Enzo (from My Dog Skip) - Raise A Green Dog! 7. The Taco Bell Chihuahua - The Poodle (and dog) blog 8. Old "Yeller" - For the Love of Labradors 9. Animal Actor 10. Animal Actor 11. Animal Actor 12. Animal Actor 13. Animal Actor 14. Animal Actor 15. Animal Actor 16. Animal Actor 17. Animal Actor 18. Animal Actor 19. Animal Actor 20. Animal Actor

Important: Once I get a ping back from you, I will add your anchor text and the associated link you designate as “Host Tag” here, and add your favorite animal actor to the list here. As more and more doggie bloggers copy and paste this matrix, the more backlinks you will have with your anchor text. If everybody who copies and pastes from your blog does the same, pretty soon this will spread and go viral. (And we don’t have to stop at 20!) So, the sooner you participate, the more links with anchor text you will receive.

There it is folks. This should help you improve your Technorati ranking, SERP and Google PR and get you noticed with more blogs - we all like making friends, right? Please leave a comment here if you have copied from this matrix so that I can add you just in case your ping-back didn’t reach me.

————— Copy and paste this line and above ——————

(Thanks to Johann the Dog for the basic matrix!)
